Part of the Strathearn community was annexed to Strathcona in 1907. When Strathcona amalgamated with Edmonton in 1912, Strathearn became an Edmonton neighbourhood.
Strathearn is Scottish Gaelic for “the valley of the Irish”. The name Strathearn is most likely a reference to Governor-General, Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn.
Roughly triangular in shape, the mature residential community of Strathearn is located in the south-central area of Edmonton.
Strathearn’s border to the southwest is Connors Road. To the east, the neighbourhood ends at 85 Street. Strathearn extends northwest to the North Saskatchewan River valley. Strathearn’s neighbourhood to the east is Holyrood. Bonnie Doon lies to the southwest. On the southeast is the neighbourhood of Idylwyle.
Strathearn is an area of quiet, tree-lined streets. It also affords views of downtown Edmonton.
Most of the community’s homes were built in the late forties and early fifties. Many have been remodelled. Ten percent of homes were constructed pre-WW II. Over half were built between 1946 and 1960. One in seven were built in the seventies.
Twenty percent were built in the eighties.
Almost half of the homes are single-family dwellings. One-third are low-rise apartment rental units. Twenty percent are high-rise apartment building rentals. Two out of three Strathearn residents rent.
There are many amenities in the vicinity. Bonnie Doon Shopping Centre is a short distance to the south. Shops and services can be found in Strathearn Centre strip mall. There are smaller commercial sites in the community.
Strathearn neighbourhood has three parks at the school grounds as well as Silver Heights Park and Strathearn Park.
The community also has three churches: Strathearn United Church, Assumption Catholic Church and the Bonnie Doon Stake Centre of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Strathearn’s elementary school was closed in 2005. There are two nearby elementary schools: Holyrood or Rutherford schools.
A privately-run French school: TheÉcole Publique Gabrielle-Roy is run by the Conseil Scolaire Centre-Nord.
