The Windermere Estates neighbourhood is located in Southwest Edmonton, east of the North Saskatchewan River valley and south of Anthony Henday Drive.
The name is a reference to the town of Windermere in Cumbria, England. Windermere means “winder“ to take one’s breath away, and “mere” the boundary of an area or a significant landmark.
Windermere is bounded on the south by the future realignment of Ellerslie Road, on the east by 170 Street SW and Terwillegar Drive, on the northeast by Anthony Henday Drive, and on the west and northwest by North Saskatchewan River valley.
Before urban development, the Windermere area was predominantly farmland. It is part of the Neighbourhood Structure Plan for Windermere Estates, adopted by Edmonton in 2006.
The land along the Saskatchewan River valley was developed in the sixties and seventies. Development continued through the eighties and nineties. Along the river are large single-family homes on large lots. Eighty-four single-family units went in first. They are almost all owner occupied.
Windermere has attractive, walkable paths. Many trails take advantage of local flora and fauna and natural land protection. There is a central green space with a series of parks, pathways integrated with residential development. Windermere residents have access to Langdale Pond, Haddow Park, and Tomlinson Common Park.
Windermere has three schools: St. John XXII, Constable Daniel Woodall School, and Dr. Maragaret Ann Armour in the Ambleside community.
There are three area churches: Southwest Community Church, Edmonton Church of God, and Terwillegar Community Church.
Shopping and other amenities are available at Windermere Crossing and Currents of Windermere. They also have access to health services, commercial, recreational, and education opportunities at Mill Woods Town Centre on the northeast South Edmonton Common, Millbourne Market Mall, and West Edmonton Mall.
Residents can easily access the cultural, education, entertainment, recreation, healthcare, and dining opportunities of the downtown core and other Edmonton neighbourhoods via Anthony Henday Drive.
